And Now The End Is Here…

In the words of Vinnie Jones "It's been emotional". After many years on the fringes of the film industry I have decided to call it a day. It's not been an easy decision but after a few final projects fell into development hell and with a youngster growing up faster every day, the time seems very much right. I've done some great things, met some amazing people but over the past few years it's become increasingly clear to me that I cant be that person that will step on anyone or anything to get where want to be. What's more with the increased volume of indie films and the continuing fall of distribution outlets the industry is becoming that much more dog eat dog and it will be increasingly hard to replicate the modest success we had with films like Ten Dead Men and Left For Dead.

Along the way there have been highs (filming at Wembley Arena, working with a legend and personal icon of mine Doug Bradley) , lows (the break-up of my relationship with Ross, the way Ten Dead Men was screwed out of money by IFM) and pretty much every emotion in between. I have seen fame (from hundreds of interviews on TV, in the papers and on the internet and radio) but only a little fortune.

I've seen Ten Dead Men sell over twenty thousand units in the UK and Left For Dead become a cult fav of the insane. I've helped numerous films get released in the UK (Infestation and CUT to name but two) through Pulp Movies and helped numerous other filmmakers with advise, help and support. But for me that's over now. I'll continuing reviewing for Phil's Quick Capsule Review and probably for Combat should it ever get back on track. Mod-life.net will remain as a testament to what we achieved and of course anyone who wants advise I'm still available. Free of charge as always. But for filmmaking, the end is here.

Thanks to everyone who has helped, guided and supported me. And sorry for those we lost along the way. Oh and a big Fuck you to the one's that ripped us off, got in our way or told us it couldn’t be done. We did it. Twice. Fuck you very much.

The new issue, out the 5^th of May to coincide with The Martial Arts Show , features an extended interview with genre legend Danny Trejo about his latest film Machete. On the subject of Machete, it’s get’s a full review and is named Film of The Month.

Graveyard Tales: Brighton Born, Brighton Dead

In an occasional series we take a look back at the films that didn’t quite make it to the finish line. First up: Brighton Born, Brighton Dead:

Ben had it all. A beautiful girlfriend, a great life, amazing friends. Then along came Mickey and Ben’s world changed. He lost it all and now just hours before he dies, Ben will take his final revenge on those who crossed him. And a few others that just get in his way.

This long gestating project has been in development for over ten years and at one point was with Miramax UK but eventually creative differences saw the Modern Life? part company with the producers and the film eventually enter ‘development hell’.

Youthful exuberance (read: arrogance) should have seen us adopt a ‘Take The Money & Run’ approach but alas in the growing age of the ‘New Auteur’ (Tarantino, Roger Avery, Rodriquez etc all) led us to believe we could do better.

Originally called ‘Life’s A Bitch…’ the cast was to include numerous well known UK actors who all has been in various stages of discussion about featuring in the film. They included: Doug Bradley (‘Hellraiser’) as drug dealer Anthony, Marc Warren (‘Hustle’) as Mickey as well as Caroline Catz (‘The Vice’), Claire Goose and Leslie Grantham alongside Modern Life? regulars such as Glenn Salvage.

Current Status: Dead and buried.

What’s next for Modern Life?

It’s been a very quite two years since the release of Ten Dead Men here at Modern Life? Whilst my former business partner has gone on to make the unreleased Warrioress and start pre-production of Manor Hunt Ball it would seem that I have done very little.

I guess that’s what happens when you focus all your efforts in a particular direction for what turns out to be little gain or thanks. However that is behind us here at Modern Life now and the future is bright.

In reality I’ve been working on a couple of ideas, one which may see some movement in 2011. In addition I’ve been talking to an old University buddy who also is looking to make a feature and has asked for my help putting it together.

In addition I’ve continued writing and editing the film section for Combat Magazine and even taken the time off to bring up a new baby.

So what does this all mean? Who knows. This business is notoriously fickle. And just because someone is offering you the deal for the century one minute doesn’t mean that will still be there a week later.

What I am going to make sure is this however. What ever, if ever, I get involved in another feature project it will be in a genre, of a subject or around a theme that I want to make. For the first time it will be true to myself rather than that of someone else. No more sub-Z list action movies as my “inspiration” and no more trying to kid myself my(our) selves that a sub £20k HD camcorder movie can compete with films with actual budgets, plots and FX’s.

So 2011 should be shaping up to be an interesting year. But then again… aren’t they always?

Dead Cert Review

Phil's Quick Capsule Review of British vampire gangster film Dead Cert got a mention and link on the official Dead Cert Facebook page this week. Dead Cert, out in October, was reviewed by Phil Hobden who deemed it to be "The Most enjoyable British film of the year...", rating it 7/10.

The story: A gang of tough London gangsters get more than they bargained for when a group of businessmen make an offer to buy their club, the Inferno. They turn out to be nothing less than Vampires wanting their land back and turn viciously on the gangsters when their demands are not met.

Dead Cert directed by Steve Lawson and starring Craig Fairbrass, Billy Murray and Danny Dyer is available now from all leading DVD retailers including HMV, ASDA, Play.com and Amazon.

On a recent trip to Paris a friend of mine discovered the most recent sighting of yet another Ten Dead Men pirate DVD... this time (logically considering the location) of the French release.

Cost: 2 Euros. Yes 2 Euros. less than a £1.50!

A D minus for effort considering it was presented in a plastic sleeve with a photocopied cover that I designed (see image).

Another One For The Graveyard…

Every so often we try something here at Modern Life? and it doesn’t quite work out. Case in point: ®AGE. August was to have seen the first issue of our new quarterly film magazine ®AGE (Redefining Action, Genre & Exploitation) be launched onto the world. Unfortunately due to last minute funding issues the magazine proved to be unviable and we had to pull the plug.

It’s a shame as I really believe that with the talent involved and the content we had lined up it would have been something a bit special. However this time it didn’t work out. However a BIG thanks to everyone who helped out.

About The Project:

®AGE was set to be a revolutionary downloadable film magazine formatted for PDF and eventually via Apps for I-pad and I-phone. Each issue would have been set along a theme – Issue 1 was looking at Revenge movies, issue 2 Ninjas, issue 3 Indie Film and so on.

With reviews, articles, interviews and opinion RAGE was set to be a new direction for online film magazines. As well as the regular and themed content, each issue would in addition have had a section dedicated to Independent filmmaking and filmmakers, with articles from some of the leading voices in the industry, interviews with up and comers and film reviews.

Featuring the stalwart team behind my Combat Film Colum, which runs film reviews, news and opinion each month in the world famous Combat Magazine, content from MJ Simpson, screenwriter and filmmaker Clive Frayne as well as regular columns by Mike Fury (Asian Cinema), myself (Combat Film) and Lucy Hay (Screenwriting).

Issue One was to feature interviews with the director of Harry Brown, an interview with stunt legend Loren Janes, A look at The Punisher movies & Comic book, What ever Happened To… Michael Dudikoff and much more. Future issued we’d lined up interviews with genre legends Loren Avedon, Darren Shalavi, Matthias Hues, Isaac Florentine as well as director Uwe Boll.

TEN DEAD MEN… The Final Word (Well Maybe!)

Well last I heard (funny enough not from any one involved in the film!) TEN DEAD MEN had shifted well over 20,000 units in the UK alone. That, for a film made for under £12k actual and £30k-ish total Including deferments is pretty damn good. From my conversions with the US distributor, the film has done pretty good over there as well, doing good business on Netflix and Blockbuster.

Last I spoke to Ross the film hadn’t shifted any new territories but for what it was it’s still done some very respectable business and got out in enough countries to make a name for itself.

Okay so we’re not exactly the highest rated film on LoveFilm or the IMDB (hovering around 4/10) but this was never going to be a film everyone liked. Hell even I’m not that big a fan!

Funny enough a friend of mine recently picked me up a pirate copy from a street vendor in Paris. I always think that if someone goes to the extreme of pirating a DVD, producing a crappy sleeve and selling it on the street corner you must have done something right!

Oh and of course on top of all of this we had a ban in Germany. Us. Banned. In GERMANY? Wow… that country pretty much allows anything. I know, I’ve watched the adult PPV over there!

I guess the biggest disappointment (other than this was the film that broke the camels back so to speak with Ross & myself) is that majority no one will ever see any money of it because of the deal with IFM (and I’m not talking about me – money was never my motivation, but instead others on the film who worked really hard to make it happen).

But a lesson learned for all…

Blog #005: King of The World My Arse...

So James Cameron believes films like Piranha 3-D cheapens the medium and represents a step backwards to when 3-D films were a last gasp of air for a dying franchise (Friday 13th 3-D, Jaws 3-D).

Er. No. I’d much rather see a fun movie like Piranha 3-D (which even though it was retro fitted 3-D was damn enjoyable) with its blood letting, naked women and penis chomping fish than some wretched drama or po-faced Avatar rip off. What Cameron seems to have forgotten is that movies should be fun. Like Aliens was. Or Terminator 2.

Much like George Lucas, JC (hmmm... JC? Could it be...) seems to have forgotten why he started making films in the first place.

Anyway… let’s not forget that this is coming from the same James Cameron that gave us the risable Titanic. Who is thinking of rerto fitting said movie in 3-D.

Blog 002: 3 Bloody D.

Okay this is getting silly. When did the right to choose what I watch and pay money to see get taken away from me?

Yes UK cinemas (and Cineworld) I'm looking at you!

It's become almost impossible to wtach a new release NOT in 3-D now, even when they weren't bloody shot that way. Is it for the art? No. Of course not. It's the money.

Personally I don’t feel that I should pay up to £2.50 per film more (ontop of the far too expensive £7.50 + prices) to watch a film in a format that it wasn’t made in and is being shown in JUST as a way to exploit further revenue out of me. So therefore now any film that is released this way, without the option of a 2-D screening at a sensible hour will be downloaded. Illegally.

Yes that's right I am now actively going to ILLEGALLY download any film where the cinema DOESN’T give me the option of watching it in 2-D (unless like Avatar is was FILMED, designed and SHOT in 3-d… so not Alice In wonderland, Titans or any of the other retro fitted 3-d monstrosities).

And I'd advise you to do the same. It's time we, the film fans, fight back.

Blog 001: Films, Spiderman and Twiglet (July 5th 2010)

This Weekend I watched two very different films. BLOOD RIVER was a by the numbers at first ‘Hitcher’ style thriller that developed into something MUCH more that I expected and FIGHTING POLITCIS a rather biased (as all documentaries are I guess) look at the career of former UFC fighter Matt Lindland.

Both were solid three star movies… BLOOD RIVER looses marks for just being that little bit too by the numbers to start and FIGHTING POLOITICS for being a little dull and repetitive in places.

That said BLOOD RIVER did inspire an idea. More on that to follow.

I avoided seeing TWIGLET ECLIPSE this weekend but friends deamed it to be ‘Better than the others but still dull’. Which is kind of like saying being kicked in the nuts is better that being raped by a bear. It is. But both are still pretty unappealing.

Finally so unknown British actor has been cast in the reboot of SPIDERMAN, a film that will focus on the early days of Peter Parker as he became the tight wearing hero. Sounds very much like a film Sam Rami once made called SPIDERMAN. The pointless continuation of the remake/reboot cycle continues…

It’s only a matter of time until Uwe Boll takes on SHAWSHANK…

We Recommend: AMERICAN: THE BILL HICKS STORY

Whilst I have absolutely no affiliation with the movie what so ever and (due to crappy cinemas where I live) haven’t even had an opportunity to watch the film yet, AMERICAN: THE BILL HICKS STORY is represents two things I believe in very much: Independent cinema and the legend that is Bill Hicks.

A legendary comedian who was mostly ignore din the home in the US, Bill’s star shone bright for a far too brief a time and as most comedians will tell you left a mark for them to consider him to be one of the most influential of all time. For those of you who don’t know Phil’s Quick Capsule Review is a homage to Bill’s own rant review of Basic Instinct.

I’m a massive Hicks fan and, judging from the great reviews, this film does his legend justice.

"Master Leo Au Yeung is the UK’s leading Wing Chun practitioner and teacher. Last year he was invited by the producers to choreograph the fight scenes for the movie of legendary Wing Chun pioneer Yip Man called 'Ip Man', alongside genre legends Sammo Hung and Donnie Yen.

Of course Yip Man's most famous pupil was legendary martial artist and actor Bruce Lee who studied under him from 1954 to 1957 and in the years since Bruce Lee’s untimely death Wing Chun has become the preeminent form of Chinese Kung Fu practiced today. I’m often ask what podcasts I listen to, film wise, and I’m ashamed to say that up until last year the answer was none. No film podcasts, no reviews podcasts… in fact no podcasts at all.

I started listen to THE MIDNIGHT MOVIE CLUB podcast but quickly switched off when I, listening to their review of THEY LIVE they couldn’t name either of the two leads. And they hated the film. Both big fat zeros in my book.

So what DO I listen to? Most recently it’s MONDO MOVIE and MAYO & KERMODE on RADIO 5. Mondo movies take the review a film each week then some supplementary work around a theme and the guys behind it are both knowledgeable and interesting to listen to.

The SIMON MAYO & MARK KERMODE FILM REVIEW on Radio 5 is both humorous and insightful and reminds me once again just how much of a mistake hiring Claudia Winkleman to host Film 2010 really was by the BBC. Should have been the good Dr. Okay so Kermode rates his favourite film as The Exorcist (personally I hate it) but he also raved about the much hated NINJA ASSASIN so he’s not all bad in my book.

So there you go MONDO MOVIES and SIMON MAYO & MARK KERMODE FILM REVIEW. Anyone else got one they like to listern to?

Cut - Another new review

Another new review of CUT has appeard online, this time care of the Film Reel blog.

"This movie has an incredible concept. It’s shot in one take, one continuous shot from one camera and it’s impressive. Throughout the film the camera will pan by a clock just to show the passage of time and to enforce the concept of the one take film.

The flick was 69 minutes long including credits and the clock fits perfectly as the entire incident takes place within the span of about 65 minutes. It’s a great idea and is well executed."

HeyYouGuys.co.uk has posted a review for British horror thriller CUT.

"Movies over the years have become standard in the way that they’re filmed and it takes a movie like CUT to come along with a simple idea that changes that and tries something completely new. The basic premise of the movie is that rather than cutting between shots from one camera to another, like you’d seen in any feature film, it’s all taken in one, continuous, long 60 minute take. Sounds ambitious but Alexander Williams decided to take the task on directing a cast which included Zach Galligan, Michael Socha, Danielle Lloyd, Simon Phillips, River George, Dominic Burns, Eden Watson, Lauri Brewster, Nick Onsloe, Adam Dakin, Deborah Burns, Lewis Copson and Jack Lewis...."

"Question for you... what do 'Tango & Cash', 'In Her Shoes' and 'Tremors' all have in common? Well apart from the fact they all feature in my DVD collection (alhough let me assure you ‘In Her Shoes’ is more down to my wife than me!) they also, and more relevantly, feature stunts or fight coordination by Jeff Imada. And whilst Imada may not be a name you instantly recognise, you have certainly seen his work.

Let me quantify that statement. A friend of mine in the States was recently sat watching TV. Uninspired by the latest reality TV show he starts channel hopping. First channel he switches onto - ‘Big Trouble In Little China’, featuring a quick appearance of stunt man, actor and fight coordinator Jeff Imada. Turns over the channel to a Master Card advert which happens to once again feature Jeff Imada. Turns over again, 'Heroes'. There he is again - Jeff Imada. Another channel. '24'. Jeff Imada. And that was just one advert break. But then again when your resume includes over 150 films and TV shows chances are most days at least something that Imada worked on will be screening."
